The benefits of yoga for golfers! Including 5 poses to help your swing!

Yoga and golf may seem like very different activities at first glance, but they actually have a lot in common!

Both require a great deal of focus, balance, and flexibility, and both can be physically and mentally challenging. That's why yoga can be such a great complement to golf, helping golfers to improve their game and prevent injury.

Below are some of the way yoga can benefit your body & golf game!

Improved Flexibility

One of the main benefits of yoga for golfers is improved flexibility. Golfers need to have a wide range of motion in their hips, shoulders, and spine to make a full swing, and yoga can help to improve flexibility in all of these areas. By practicing yoga regularly, golfers can increase their range of motion and achieve a fuller, more effortless swing. This can help to increase clubhead speed and accuracy, leading to longer and more precise shots.

Better Balance

Another key benefit of yoga for golfers is better balance. Golfers need to maintain their balance throughout the swing, and any loss of balance can lead to poor shots or even injury. Yoga helps to improve balance by strengthening the muscles in the legs and core, as well as improving proprioception (the body's sense of where it is in space). By practicing yoga poses that challenge balance, golfers can improve their stability and consistency on the course.

Reduced Injury Risk

Golf can be hard on the body, especially for those who play frequently. The repetitive motion of swinging a club can lead to overuse injuries in the shoulders, wrists, elbows, and back. Yoga can help to reduce the risk of these injuries by improving flexibility, balance, and strength, as well as promoting proper alignment and posture. By practicing yoga regularly, golfers can keep their bodies healthy and prevent injury.

Stress Relief

Golf can be a stressful game, especially when you're trying to hit that perfect shot. Yoga can help to reduce stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and mindfulness. By focusing on the breath and staying present in the moment, golfers can learn to stay calm and centered on the course, even when things aren't going their way.

Getting Started with Yoga

If you're a golfer who's interested in trying yoga, there are many ways to get started.

Many yoga studios offer classes specifically for golfers, which focus on poses that are beneficial for the golf swing. Alternatively, you can start practicing yoga at home with online videos or apps.

At Yogalife studios we offer various classes for all preferences, these classes will incorporate some or all of the below poses. We recommend checking out a Vinsaysa flow class or a Yin class which poses are held for a longer period of time.

If you cannot make it in studio - check out our Video on Demand platform!

A few benefical yoga poses for golfers include:

Downward-Facing Dog: This pose helps to stretch the hamstrings and calves, as well as the shoulders and spine.

Warrior II: This pose strengthens the legs and core, while also stretching the hips and shoulders.

Child's Pose: This pose is great for relaxation and stress relief, and can also help to stretch the back and hips.

Tree Pose: This pose improves balance and stability in the legs and core.

Triangle Pose: This pose stretches the hamstrings and hips, as well as the spine and shoulders.

This pose features a cork block to assist with balance & improving form while feeling the full benefit of this pose!

Purchase Here

Yoga and golf may seem like an unlikely pair, but they actually have a lot in common. By practicing yoga regularly, golfers can improve their flexibility, balance, and strength, as well as reduce their risk of injury and stress. So if you're a golfer looking to improve your game, consider joining us for a yoga class at our South Edmonton studio!

Your body (and your golf swing) will thank you!

Yogalife Studios farewell sign

While we are sad to see our North Edmonton studio go, we are excited for Yogalife’s future!

Presently, we are finalizing the details of our lease for a new studio on 124 Street, close to the Brewery District. There will be parking!

We are working on design plans and getting development permits applied for. We'll likely be 'breaking ground' in September or October, depending on how quick or slow the city works. Once we have a timeline, we'll be posting more about it on our socials and keeping everyone updated through our newsletters.

It is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment—and accepting it without judgment.

Free2BMe - Our Next Karma Program Recipient

Free2BMe 'Arm in Arm'.jpg
Since 2005, Free2BMe Physical Activity Program for Kids and Teens with Disabilities, the youth component of The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement at the University of Alberta has been providing innovative programs for children and youth living with impairment to be active.

The Free2BMe credo is to empower kids and teens experiencing disability to:

Andrew - 001.JPG

• Be more physically active, fit and healthy

• Feel good about themselves

• Experience success

• Have fun doing “kid” things

• Become vital, self-determined adults

Every year, hundreds of kids and teens ages 4-21 come through the program—with demand increasing every year. Children and youth and their families come to develop their physical confidence and competence in our safe, nonclinical environment. We are the one place in the Greater Edmonton area that any child living with a physical, sensory or developmental impairment can come to learn to ride their bike, throw a ball, understand game play concepts, be introduced to a fitness centre, gain exposure to the world of Para-sport, and be a part of the team for the first time. We do this through four models of service delivery: individual programming, instructional group programs, community and school group outreach and community exercise transition.

Youth with scarves.jpg

In addition to providing direct service delivery to the community, Free2BMe provides applied learning opportunities for students at the University of Alberta. Last year, over 180 students from physical education and recreation, education, kinesiology and rehabilitation gained valuable hands on experience within Free2Bme programs. Students go on to become teachers, coaches, rehabilitation professionals, physicians and community leaders.

Free2BMe Physical Activity Program for Kids and Teens Experiencing Disability is a one of a kind program providing physical activity, fitness and sport instruction for children and youth living with physical, developmental and sensory impairments.

Founded in 2005, Free2BMe has made an impact in the lives of over 1200 families experiencing disability. Annually, the dynamic program delivered through The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement at The University of Alberta serves 450 children and youth ages 4-21 across a variety of 1:1 individualized physical activity and fitness sessions, and instructional group programs.

5 Drinks to Warm Your Soul This Holiday Season

I’m not sure about you, but 90% of the reason I can handle the wintertime is because I absolutely adore cozying up to a nice log fire place, wrapped in a fuzzy Costco blanket, holding a hot cup of something steamy.

Not being much of an advocate for chain cafes, I’ve cruised through the Edmontonian café scene and am reporting back to you with some of the best (and original) hot cups of heaven for you to try next time you’re craving a little more than a standard coffee.

Café Mosaics

10844 82 Avenue NW | https://www.cafemosaics.com

DSC6251.jpg

Mellow Yellow.

Choosing just one drink from Café Mosaics may have been the hardest thing I’ve had to do in a while, but thankfully, I’m a bit biased in favour of turmeric.

Imagine pumpkin spice, but natural, good for you, and not drowning in sugar. This spiced turmeric latte is going to make you swear off of Starbucks when you taste the kick this latte leaves you with.

Woodrack Café

 7603 109 Street NW | https://www.thewoodrackcafe.com

20150928_144616.jpg

White Hot Earl Latte.

This was arguably the best original drink I’ve come across on my Edmonton exploration. This is a lavender London Fog combined with a white hot chocolate; each flavour being extremely delicate and ever-so subtle.

The only downside to most of the gorgeously crafted drinks out there is you really feel like you can’t have more than one. This, however, I reckon I could consume a bathtubs worth in a sitting and still feel pretty proud about my day.

Mandolin Books & Coffee Co.

6419 112 Avenue NW | mandolinbooks.com

4946851961_7e690ba140_b.jpg

Red Symphony.

A red rooibos tea with white hot chocolate, topped with honey and whip cream.

I’m sorry, what? Whoever created this beautiful concoction must have a sweet tooth as big as YEG itself. Normally sweets are just not my forte (I’m more of a Salt & Vinegar chips kind of girl), but I could not be more than happy that I’ve stumbled upon it. Its perfectly creamy consistency pulling different yet complementing flavours in from every direction made each sip taste like Christmas without feeling like my teeth were about to rot away.

Remedy Café

Multiple Locations | remedycafe.ca

img_3071.jpeg

Almond Kashmire Chai.

Let’s admit it: You can’t have a “Top 5 Hot Drinks” blog post and not include a chai off of Remedy’s list. Although the standard chai is equally as to die for, the kasmire chai just adds that touch of extra love and  delicacy with its added ground pistachios and rose petals that take this hot drink from spicy to smooth and florally.

My tip: change your standard 2% milk out for almond milk to make your chai add some more of those delightful nutty flavours.

Bru Coffee + Beer House

11965 Jasper Avenue | www.brucoffeeandbeerhouse.com

224980_037830a36b367f0d64baf0284983e506758f6cbd.jpg_facebook.jpg

Dark Chocolate Peppermint Mocha.

Bru uses 64% extra-bitter Guayaquil cocoa for all of their chocolate based drinks, and when it hits your lips, you will feel a wave of respect and gratefulness for it take over your body. Keep in mind all of the benefits dark chocolate: . You’re doing your body a favour by ordering this.

PS. Did I mention that that it comes with a candy cane and/or mini marshmallows, served in a Christmas mug? As if you couldn’t love a drink more.

New Class Reservation Policy

1IMG_1922.jpg

Hey Yogalifers!

We HEAR you!  We definitely do, and have been working hard on solutions for the busy-ness of the studios and being unable to get into your favourite classes!  Or that you have to show up really early for class to be able to get in a spot.

We understand that A) That's not the best use of time and B) sometimes you just can't!

So here's our new class reservation policy.

Class Reservation Policy

Thank you to everyone who provided us feedback about our classes and how busy it's been. We definitely hear you! The studios have been overwhelmingly busy and we know it has been difficult to get into your favourite classes! So we're changing things up a bit to enhance your experience at Yogalife. We want you to get your yoga in without it being so stressful.

  1. We are increasing the number of pre-registrations available for classes so that you can be certain you'll get into class.
  2. We will be charging for no shows (as this happens too often and is unfair for those students who plan to come but is unable to reserve a spot).
  3. If you do know you won't be able to make it, you can call or cancel your reservation up to 5 minutes prior to class.
  4. Pre-Registrations will be allowed up to 3 days prior to class, unfortunately we will no longer allow unlimited future bookings. (Unlimited days = more no shows).
  5. Please note that the 10 minute rule still applies. If you reserve a spot, that spot will be held up until 10 minutes prior to class. At that point, your spot will be given to the next person on the wait list and you will be charged a late cancel. (If you know you will be unable to make it, please give us a call)

We hope these changes will create better accountability for all of us. We really want to provide you the best experience and we understand that it's very disappointing to travel all the way only to find out that you won't be making it into class.

Please bear with us as we continue to adjust and ensure quality experiences.

Sincerely, Caren, Lindsey, Michelle & Sara.

The Hype About Cleansing

juices-3.jpg

Guest Post from Bianca Osbourne of Vitality Kitchen.

Have you ever wondered what all the hype is about cleansing? Or if it’s right for you? The craze seems to have swept the world, but it begs the question, why cleanse?

Truthfully, the human body is a well-oiled machine, that can do a great many things, including cleanse itself; but this is in a perfect world. With environmental factors such as pollution, lifestyle factors like our diet and the act of just being our bodies lose their ability to cleanse effectively; which leaves us feeling sluggish, foggy and desperately trying to shed weight. Which is why the human body benefits so greatly from cleansing.

What’s In It For Me, You Ask?

The health benefits of cleansing are so profound, in the form of glowing skin, lustrous hair and boundless energy- seriously; and if weight loss is your quest, this is also likely to occur. Usually whatever you need to balance out in your body will occur; that’s the beauty of cleansing, it allows the body to do what it is able to naturally do, uninterrupted. Some people lose weight, while others simply maintain. It all depends on what your body needs. When we get the proper nutrition, our system operates fully and this contributes to better overall functionality. Simply put, we feel better.

The main idea behind juice cleansing, in particular, is the internal systems become cleansed and the digestive system gets a much-needed break. As a result of this, we clean out the colon and intestines, which is the storehouse for much bacteria (good and bad) which may be blocking the immune system or causing other ill effects.

Who Isn’t Suited To Cleansing…

With that being said, not everyone is suited to juice cleansing, certainly if you live with diabetes. Diabetes is a blood sugar disorder, and juices are fruits and vegetables with the fibre removed; and despite how amazing the contents of the juice are, without the fibre, this can send blood sugar sailing- not good! Smoothie cleanses are best suited to diabetics, because we leave all the fibre in; and, although, the aforementioned digestive rest is not achieved, the digestive system gets a super sweep, that will unblock ANY block that’s getting you down!

Juice cleanses are also poorly suited to those with intensely physical lifestyles; fibre gives your body matter to use as energy, without it you simply cannot meet the demands you place on your body. Which is why a NOURISH cleanse is best for you. A NOURISH cleanse is comprised of juice, smoothies, soups and salads; and like a smoothie cleanse, this will give your digestive system a swift kick in the you-know-what!

Yoga and Cleansing

In the ancient yogic tradition, you can find texts of yogis performing kriyas and fasting to attain a level of subtle energy and clarity to enter deeper into meditation and connect with the Source more deeply.

A powerful way we can recreate such an experience for ourselves in modern times is through a cleanse- juice, smoothie or nourish.

So Yogalife and I would like to invite you to enhance your 30in35 yoga challenge experience with a Vitality Kitchen cleanse and feel for yourself the synergy between yoga and cleansing.

You will have the choice of joining the fun at the South Edmonton Yogalife studio or the North Edmonton Yogalife studio, starting at Yogalife South on February 24th and alternating each studio for the duration of the challenge. There is a maximum of 10 participants per studio per week, so don’t miss out!

What’s Included:

  • An opening information circle led by me Bianca Osbourne, detailing the importance of cleansing the body, and how to do it effectively.
  • 10% off a 3,4 or 5 day Vitality Kitchen cleanse of your choice
  • Support from yours truly, Chef and Culinary Nutrition Expert of the Vitality Kitchen, Bianca Osbourne.

I look forward to being your guide! For more information about cleansing, check out my “Why Cleanse” video here; or visit my website for more information about my cleansing programs and me! www.thevitalitykitchen.ca

Roasted Cauliflower & Quinoa

roastedcauliflower.jpg

Inspired to create some nourishment in my life and to have a healthy lunch after a 5 day juice cleanse.

Hi, my name is Caren and I don't cook. Or I hardly ever do anyway. I am the type to whip a salad together or I have very wonderful amazing friends who keep me fed. But there have been some shifts in life and there's so much inspiration in this world to keep us thriving and moving forward. So here's one step for me... Made a quick lunch today and it was delicious! Just wanted to share...

Roasted Cauliflower & Quinoa.

You'll need.

- 1 head of cauliflower

- salt & pepper

- half a lemon

- balsamic vinegar

- a cup of quinoa or more if you want

To cook.

1. Preheat oven to 400F.

2. Break the cauliflower into florets and spread them onto a baking sheet or pan.

3. Squeeze lemon juice and add salt and pepper all over, option to drizzle olive oil as well.

4. Throw it in the oven for about 15 minutes or until starting to brown.

5. Boil quinoa in a pot and let the water be soaked up into the grains.

Once everything is ready, plate it and drizzle balsamic vinegar on top. Et Voila, c'est fini.

Easiest and most delicious thing I've made and it took me no time at all!

Enjoy : )

Step 1: From downward facing dog, bring yourself forward into a plank position on an inhale breath.  Shoulders over the wrists, legs strong and straight, core engaged. (*be sure not to collapse through your low back)

Step 2: On the exhale, lower your knees to the floor and un-tuck your toes.  Keeping your elbows hugging into your side ribs, lower your chest, and then your hips to your mat.

Step 3: Using your core, inhale to lift your chest away from the floor hugging your shoulder blades together.

Step 4:  Root down through your palms, and on the exhale, lift up onto your hands and knees, tuck your toes under and lift your hips back to downward facing dog.

Cleanse You

Sarah_Nate-19.jpg

As the seasons change, the days pass, and the moon waxes and wanes our bodies are continuously shifting along with these rhythms.  Fall turns to winter and the transition period from Yang to Yin energy is complete; as we move into the utmost Yin time of year (winter), the body yearns for introspection and digestion of summer’s blossoming’s.

Winter is a time to move slowly and sink deep into the truth of what we really are.

Yogalifer Sarah Zanbeek believes in cleansing from a holistic sense: mind, body and soul.  A typical cleanse may call for a week of refined habits but to really reach long-lasting goals this shift requires permanence.  Cleansing is an everyday commitment, a shift in lifestyle.  It is choosing to love yourself more than all of the temptations.

Join us January 12 at Yogalife Studios North from 1:30-4:30 to dive into this new path of health and awareness.

This is not your typical Cleanse workshop.  The focus is upon cleansing the entire self; mind, body and spirit through the artful wisdom of Chinese Medicine Organ flow and knowledge of Yoga.  To cleanse fully, we must focus on the body as a unit, each part affecting the whole.  This workshop will include pranayama (breath techniques), dynamic asana (yoga postures), meditation, and journaling with the intention deeply rooted in cleansing and removing all obstacles that are blocking the body’s natural energetic flow.  As some of you may know, the body’s energetic organs have an elegant rhythm to which they flow, as life happens around us, this energetic system can be left in disarray leading to a number of different pathologies.

Come move your body and breath to a yoga sequence designed to re-remind the body of its natural energetic circadian rhythm, ironing out all the kinks this life may have caused.

Dear Yogalife students, teachers & yogis,

Happy Happy New Year!!!

How should I start.... ;) If we haven’t had the chance to meet yet, let me introduce myself. My name is Caren. I was the very first Yogalifer pretty much ever. I have had the pleasure of seeing the growth of this little studio become what it is today. Thank you for all the love and support that you show our Yogalife family everyday just by showing up.

My resolution this year is to start 2014 with clarity, integrity and intention. For me, 2013 has been a full year of shifts and lessons, of opportunity and growth. I am so fortunate and blessed to be part of such a rich yoga community, to be able to find abundance in the relationships I have made and to love what I get to do everyday. Thank you for showing up and helping me see that.

It might get long… so thank you for continuing to read this.... : )

Gratitude to the teachers who pour their heart and soul out in every class they teach, gratitude to them for helping us inspire health, strength, vibrancy and more in our community.

Gratitude to the front desk yogis who keep up with the cleaning and the laundry with vigour so that we can practice comfortably in the studio. Gratitude to them for making our day a little brighter with their warm smile or when they offer tea as an alternative to when we show up late for class.

Gratitude to the social media yogis for crafting beautiful reads, photos and videos to keep us motivated, educated and excited.

And Gratitude to all the students who keep showing up for classes and workshops, ready to move, ready to breathe and ready to learn. Your determination and exuberance fills me with humility and pride.

It’s already 2014! It’s hard to imagine that life moves so quickly and that Yogalife has been open for almost 4 years now. No, it doesn’t feel like just yesterday that we opened our doors, but my body definitely still remembers that "night before open foot fracture", and the space boot that came with it. My foot still hurts when it’s cold out…

This year our intention is to craft classes, workshops, and blog content that will inspire you. So we are offering a January and February filled with workshops dedicated to motivating your resolutions and goals. Perhaps there’s a workshop that will move you, challenge you, and make you smile.

Share your thoughts with us on how you felt about 2013. What do you want to see this year and what interests you?

These past 4 years have been a wild ride! I can’t wait to see what this upcoming year brings. Feels like it’s going to be… wait for it…. LEGENDARY.

Love,

Caren
